TYPES OF TAMIYA PAINTS. WHY ARE TAMIYA ACRYLIC PAINTS SO POPULAR?

2188 0 08/10/2020

There is probably no such modeller who would not think that the model will look realistic without the correct and high-quality painting. Professionals and novice modelers argue hotly on forms, write many articles and notes about which shade is best for an airplane wing, which paint is best for an airbrush, how to apply an even layer and how to dilute. Well, the most common debate is: Which company makes the best paint for prefabs? We cannot answer this question so that everyone gets what they want, but we can offer the products of Tamiya, whose paints are one of the leaders among paints in stand modeling.

Tamiya model paints are suitable for both airbrush and brush applications. In addition, the manufacturer's assortment includes all kinds of spray paints or aerosols.

               Types of Tamiya paints

         - Acrylic,

         - Aerosol with various markings (TS, PS-for polycarbonate, MS-for mini 4WD, AS-for aircraft),

         - Enamel.

Let's take a closer look at each type of Tamiya paint.

This type of paint is intended for use on wood or plastic surfaces. As a rule, aerosol paints are produced in cans of 100 ml and, thanks to a convenient spray torch, make it much easier to paint any prefabricated model, especially large-scale models such as 1:24 models. Tamiya spray paints are quite economical and they are enough for at least 3 models of 1:24 scale. Different markings of this type of paints indicate that they need to be applied to different types of prefabricated models or their different parts. So, for example, the MS-for mini 4WD marking means that the paint should be applied to the transparent surfaces of the cases of radio-controlled cars or mini 4WD and Dungan constructors. The AS-for aircraft mark indicates that the paint is intended for prefabricated aircraft models and this Tamiya paint table is designed specifically for aircraft and helicopters.

This type of paint is intended for use on plastic, metal or wood surfaces. Jars or tubes of paint are usually no more than 10 ml and are a ready-made product that can be used immediately after opening with a brush.

Any selected Tamiya enamel paint for models is suitable for painting with a brush, but for an airbrush it must be thinned with a solvent, for example X-20.

Enamel paints also have their own markings:

                  - Tamiya XF paint (matte),

                  - Tamiya X paint (glossy).

Acrylic paints are intended for use on plastic or wood surfaces. Tamiya jars are available in 10 ml units and have a convenient screw cap. The paints themselves are already ready for use with a brush, but for airbrushing they should be diluted with the original solvent x-20a.

Acrylic paints as well as enamel paints can be marked XF-matte or X-glossy.

It should be noted that acrylic paints are much more common in modeling for several reasons, but their main advantage is their short drying time. Acrylic paints are one of the varieties of water-based paints, and therefore they can be diluted with plain water, a mixture of alcohols or ethers.

Tamiya acrylic paint, which you can buy in our online store StendModels, is a homogeneous mixture of an emulsion of a special acrylic polymer, thinner and pigment. The paints of this manufacturer also often include a non-toxic retarder (for example, propylene glycol or glycerin), which slows down the evaporation of the diluent. A large retarder percentage is usually due to the fact that Tamiya acrylic paints, the catalog of which includes a wide variety of glossy shades. They lie flat and have a characteristic shine. Acrylic paints of this manufacturer dry quickly enough (from 15 minutes), and the total drying time rarely exceeds 1 hour.

The "hiding power" of acrylic paints "metallic" is somewhat worse than that of enamel paints due to the peculiarities of the pigment. Therefore, they are best applied to a smooth and glossy surface, such as varnished.

Acrylic paints are best used as a base tone. In addition, Tamiya paints, the color chart of which is quite diverse, can act as a base coat without the use of a preliminary primer.

To summarize, it can be said that it is best for a good modeler to have several different types of paints available in base colors and complement them with the necessary shades for a particular model. And we, in turn, can offer a considerable assortment of all kinds of Tamiya paints with convenient delivery and at a favorable price!
